“Summertime and the livin’ is easy.” And in comparison to other seasons this is a very valid quote! It is, however, an extremely warm time now, and the elderly or those recovering from a medical issue can be vulnerable.
Let’s prudently enjoy the warmth of summer but also deal with the heat with healthy, thoughtful approaches.
To stay cool at home, especially without air conditioning, focus on blocking sunlight, improving airflow, and staying hydrated. This means closing curtains and blinds during the day to block sunlight, and open windows at night when the air is cooler to encourage cross-ventilation.
Use fans to circulate air, and consider using a dehumidifier to reduce humidity, which can make you feel hotter.
Your homecare agency and support teams can help you or your loved ones stay hydrated, and also take cool showers or baths to help regulate body temperature. Applying cool, damp cloths to neck or wrists can help lower body temperature down quickly, and this can be incorporated into your homecare visits.
Later in the day, avoid using the oven, and cook meals in the morning. As you head into evening, consider cool bedding, which is breathable and lightweight.
It is also important to remain active, and to maintain movement. The cooler, early morning is a great time for a walk, some stretching, a little time in the garden or a visit through the neighbourhood. Your homecare team is well-equipped to help with this, and to ensure you or your loved one have a confident, healthy start to the day.
