The whole world is a series of miracles, but we’re so used to them we call them ordinary things. –Hans Christian Andersen
Ordinary things: cosy clean bedding on a windy winter night; a quiet conversation over afternoon tea; the springtime glow of your rose garden; a Wednesday afternoon Bridge (or Mah Jong, or Poker) game with old friends; a delicious meal shared with someone you love. A song that is part of the soundtrack to your life. In the busyness of everyday life, these are things that we often take for granted. But they are also the things that, when faced with the challenges associated with aging or recovering from injury or illness, become the most precious. Ordinary things that have the power to help and heal us in ways that can sometimes feel…miraculous.
Here, at Stay At Home Nursing, we believe that ordinary things—our daily relationships, the routines that bring us comfort, the challenges and personal goals we set to ensure continual growth—are central to the human experience. Ordinary things are essential in maintaining a person’s identity, culture, and a sense of purpose and belonging. This is true across our lifespan. Our mission is to provide a wider range of options for individuals to age and/or heal at home, in their chosen community, doing the ordinary things that are important to them.
At the heart of this mission is our frontline field staff, the Personal Support Workers, Nurses, and Nurse Practioners: extra-ordinary people doing extra-ordinary work. The work of caring, of caregiving, is the oil that makes the engines of our homes, our communities, our entire health care system run smoothly. It is challenging work that far too often goes unseen, or undervalued. Stay At Home Nursing is committed to raising awareness, and to celebrating, the highly skilled, critically important, extra-ordinarily precious work undertaken by our Care Providers, each of whom has their own unique story. This new series—Everday Heroes! —introduces some of the exceptional individuals who have embraced this challenging yet rewarding job, choosing to be part of our Stay At Home Nursing home team.
